The Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission will consider the Bladensburg Battlefield (PG: 68-134) for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 2024. The National Register is the Federal Government's official list of properties considered worthy of recognition for their significance in American history and culture. The meeting will be held in-person at the Cheverly Town Hall (6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD 20785) beginning at 6:30 pm and virtually. Access information for the virtual meeting is available at https://www.pgplanning.org/countywideplanning/historic-preservation. You are most welcome to attend and comment. Should you wish to submit written comments at this time, please address your comments to Chairman John Peter Thompson and submit them to [email protected] no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 15, 2024. Prince George’s County is certified by the Maryland Historical Trust and the National Park Service to participate in the National Register nomination process. In its role as a Certified Local Government, Prince George’s County is charged with an initial assessment of the National Register eligibility of the resource and the sufficiency of the nomination documentation. The Historic Preservation Commission and County Executive will make recommendations to the Maryland Historical Trust, which administers the National Register program as the State Historic Preservation Office for Maryland. If both the Historic Preservation Commission and the County Executive oppose the nomination, the process will stop unless an appeal is filed with the State Historic Preservation Officer. If either of these recommends nomination, the documentation will be forwarded to the Maryland Historical Trust for further processing. As part of the nomination process, the Maryland Historical Trust also offers you the opportunity to comment and to submit letters of support or objection if you so desire. You may contact the Commission to receive a copy of the Commission meeting agenda, the nomination documentation, the criteria used for evaluation, information about the effects of listing, and information on the Certified Local Government involvement in the National Register nomination process. Please contact Amelia Chisholm at [email protected] and (301) 952-4326.
